Halloween is right around the corner, which for most children mean buckets of free delicious candy! Here are 5 ways to help you and your children stay mouth healthy during this sugary sweet holiday.
1. Timing is Everything
It is best to eat your Halloween candy or other sugary sweets with meals or shortly after mealtime. Saliva production increases during meals and helps reduce the amount of sugar that remains on your teeth.
2. Rinse After Indulging
Rinsing your mouth with water can remove sugar residue. Brushing and flossing after eating candy is also a great idea!
3. Choose Candy Carefully
Sticky candies, such as, taffy, gummy bears, and lollipops cling to your teeth! They take longer to get washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay. The worst candies for dental health are sour ones, which contain acids, and hard candies, which stay in contact with your teeth for long periods of time and might even chip or break a tooth.
4. Chew Gum with the ADA Seal
Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after meals helps reduce tooth decay, because increased saliva flow helps wash out food and neutralize the acid produced by dental plaque bacteria.
5. Have a Healthy Diet
The foods you choose as fuel and how often you eat affects your general health and that of your teeth and gums. Binging on candy might disrupt normal, healthy eating habits. It is important for you and your children to eat balanced meals.
If you do indulge your inner sweet tooth this Halloween, it is a good time to schedule a dental checkup and cleaning. Have a safe and fun Halloween!
